Project Space Festival Juárez 2016 / The Celebration
Project Space Festival Juárez is focused on the importance of having recreational and ludic time.
It is inspired by the idea that parties are forms of art that cannot be captured by any medium and that you have to be part of to fully experience it. The project idea also feeds off the strong EDM culture within the city that practices ancient rituals associated with the party, such as the power of dancing together.
A celebration can be defined as an occasion in which we engage in enjoyable social activities to commemorate an important event. Historically, they were associated with healing and used after war as a means to recuperate from the death of loved ones and heal the horrors of battle.
Celebrations are considered central to create cohesiveness within the community, but can also be associated with animalistic behavior, like going into trance and having Dionysian experiences.
Nowadays, celebration or partying is often associated with consumption of illegal substances and addictions; which in turn makes huge profits for drug cartels. Thus, in a way the celebrator supports a life full of vice, illegality, and violence. A city like Juarez, represents perfectly this paradox associated to the concept of a party.
Juarez is known because of its nightlife, which began to grow during the prohibition period in the United States. People from the north would come every weekend to Juarez to have a good time. There were many nightclubs and shows every night. It was associated with a No Man’s Land, with freedom and decadence. Songs like Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues from Bob Dylan or Cocaine Blues by Johnny Cash are proof of this. All these improved the economy and population of the city. It made of it a very intense and vibrant city.
However, a few years ago, Juárez was rated as the most violent city of the world. The main cause of the violence was narcotraffic. This lead the curatorial team to the following question:
Is it possible to have a deeper understanding of the identity of Juarez as we reflect upon the meaning of a celebration?
This is the central aim of Project Space Festival Juárez. Artists from Berlin and Juarez have been invited to collaborate and generate a visual dialogue addressing the idea of a celebration. Berlin artists were invited because of their long tradition of making artworks that respond to the nightlife and everything around it.
The artists were also invited because they celebrate and reflect upon what others may consider sinful, taboo, outrageous, or illegal—different practices that are part of “weekend rituals”. Such practices are also not foreign to Juarez nightlife. Thus such artworks may help to have a deeper understanding of what happens in Juarez over the weekend.
Project Space Festival Juárez is a five-day celebration at the end of November 2016 and is born as a result of a collaboration with the founders of Project Space Festival Berlin and with the desire to make the art relationship between Juarez and Berlin stronger.

Project Space festival Juárez está enfocado en la importancia de tener tiempo recreacional y lúdico.
Está inspirado en la idea de que las fiestas son formas de arte que no pueden ser capturadas por ningún medio y en las que tienes que estar dentro, para poder apreciarlas totalmente. La idea del proyecto también se alimenta de la fuerte cultura electrónica dentro de la ciudad que practica antiguos rituales asociados a la fiesta tales como el poder de bailar juntos.
Una celebración puede ser definida como una ocasión en la cual podemos abordar de manera placentera actividades sociales para conmemorar un evento importante. Históricamente, eran asociadas con la curación y usadas después de la guerra como medio para recuperarse de la muerte de los seres amados y curar los horrores de la batalla.
Las celebraciones son consideradas centrales para crear cohesión entre la comunidad, pero también pueden relacionarse con el comportamiento animal, como entrar en trance y tener una experiencia dionisiaca.
Las celebraciones actuales o fiestas son a menudo asociadas con el consumo ilegal de sustancias y adicciones; creando grandes ganancias para los carteles de drogas. Así, de cierta manera quien celebra apoya una vida llena de vicio, ilegalidad, y violencia. Una ciudad como Juárez, representa perfectamente la paradoja asociada con el concepto de fiesta.
Juárez es conocido por su vida nocturna, la cual comenzó a crecer durante el periodo de prohibición en los Estados Unidos. Gente del norte venía cada fin de semana a Juárez a pasarla bien. Existían muchos clubes nocturnos y espectáculos cada noche. Estaba asociada con una tierra de nadie, con libertad y decadencia. Canciones como “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” de Bob Dylan o “Cocaine Blues” de Johnny Cash son prueba de esto. Todo esto mejoró la economía y aumentó la población de la ciudad. Hizo de ésta una intensa y vibrante ciudad.
Sin embargo, años más tarde, Juárez fue catalogada como la ciudad más violenta del mundo. La causa mayor de la violencia fue el narcotráfico. Lo anterior llevó al equipo curatorial a la siguiente pregunta:
¿Es posible tener un entendimiento más profundo de la identidad de Juárez al reflexionar sobre el significado de la celebración?
Esta es la mira central de Project Space Festival Juárez / The Celebration. Artistas de Berlín y Juárez han sido invitados a colaborar y generar un diálogo visual orientado a la idea de la celebración. Artistas de Berlín fueron invitados por su larga tradición en trabajos artísticos que responden a la vida nocturna y todo a su alrededor.
Los artistas también fueron invitados porque celebran y reflexionan sobre lo que otros pueden considerar pecaminoso, tabú, indignante, o ilegal—prácticas que son parte de “rituales de fin de semana”. Dichas prácticas no son desconocidas por la vida nocturna en Juárez. Así tales obras de arte pueden ayudar a un entendimiento más profundo de lo que pasa en Juárez los fines de semana.
Project Space Festival Juárez es una celebración de 5 días a finales de noviembre 2016 y nace del resultado de la colaboración con las fundadoras de Project Space Festival Berlín y con el deseo de hacer más fuerte la relación del arte entre Juárez y Berlín.
